A one-off first-year rate based on CO2, then a flat standard rate from year two.

Expensive Car Supplement, years 2–6

The supplement applies if the list price when new was over £40,000 (£50,000 for electric cars). It runs for five years from the second licence, then drops off automatically.

Vehicles built more than 40 years ago can usually apply for historic vehicle tax at £0 — you still have to tax them each year.

Rates are shown for guidance. Paying by monthly Direct Debit or in two six-month payments costs about 5% more than paying for 12 months up front.
