What changed for 2026

VED is worked out from emissions, fuel type, age and the price of the car when new. Three changes affect most drivers this year.

Standard rate is £200

Petrol, diesel and hybrid cars registered after 1 April 2017 pay £200 a year from their second licence.

£440 Expensive Car Supplement

If the list price was over £40,000 when new, an extra £440 a year applies for five years.

Electric cars now pay

EVs are no longer exempt, and those over £50,000 also pick up the supplement.
